Sick note vs fit note
In the UK, many workplaces ask for a fit note (Statement of Fitness for Work) after self-certification days. Your GP assesses whether you are not fit for work, or may be fit with adjustments. A “sick note” is the everyday phrase patients use for the same type of workplace evidence.
Some statutory or specialist forms still need in-person assessment. Your doctor will say clearly if an online visit is not enough.
What happens in the appointment
You explain your symptoms, job role and how long you have already been off. The GP decides whether documentation is appropriate and for how long. When issued, notes are usually sent electronically after the consultation.
